Project Background

2019 Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture Longhua Guanlan is located in Guanlan ancient ruins. There are not only the only wooden arcade street in Shenzhen, but also the unique ancient market in Guangdong. Guanlan ancient market is one of the only "four famous fairs" in Shenzhen history, and is also "the only market block completely preserved among more than ten ancient markets in Shenzhen". It can be called "the first street of modern folk culture in Shenzhen". This exhibition takes Guanlan ancient ruins as a standard case. There are two clues behind it. The first is the extension of Guanlan ancient ruins to clarify the context and territory of modern urbanization of the whole southeast coast. Second, we hope to present the Hakka market in Shenzhen completely and deeply.

Problems and Solutions

Most of the buildings in Guanlan ancient ruins belong to dilapidated buildings, and some of them belong to cultural relics protection units. The biggest problem of the project is the selection of exhibition space. In the end, we couldn't carry out the exhibition in the indoor space like the conventional exhibition. Instead, the main exhibition hall was displayed in the public square of the ancient ruins in the form of tents. This is also the place where villagers live. A road runs through the tents, surrounded by historical buildings such as ancient temples and Red Mansions. Such treatment will naturally integrate the exhibition with the ancient ruins.

Creation Process & Result

It is divided into two exhibition areas: "memory" and "renewal": memory, the dimension of history, is to study what genes are contained in this border town of Shenzhen, which can promote the explosive development of the city in the future. "Update" is to face the future, and needs to expand the scope of attention.

Exhibition and visual design originates from the architectural features of arcade. As a commercial building form, the column is an important symbol. It is not only the structure of the building, but also the separation between the arcade and the street, and also the information carrier of commercial activities. Compared with the traditional signboards, the two-way front and side faces of the arcade can carry information. The overall design extracts the symbols of the arcade building form, Columns and bars are integrated into the visual language and display mode. The corner shed of the main exhibition hall is built across the street. The fully open form is really integrated with the local residents. On the opening day of the exhibition, many old neighborhoods were visited, and the scene was moving.
