儿童的学龄期开始正式学习汉字以及通过阅读汉字学习其他知识,文字的字体结构形态对传递信息的效果有明确的影响,采用何种汉字字体显得尤为重要。数据显示,中国在这一领域的研究和设计实践都存在不足,影响和制约着学龄期儿童的阅读体验和健康成长。

 

Pupils in elementary schools are at the very early stage of formal education. Reading Chinese is essential in this stage as it is the basic tool to aid teaching and learning. On the other hand, typography is vital for information transformation so does the choice of typefaces. Therefore, studies on typefaces for school children are needed. However, comparing with the US, Japan and many European countries, both research and practice are insufficient in China. They limit the reading experience of school children.

本研究旨在研究与设计更好的辅助学龄期儿童阅读的字体,研究从设计艺术学范畴出发,涉及视觉心理、儿童心理、字体设计、书法审美等领域的相关内容。本文以“了解问题—分析问题—解决问题”为原则,研究与设计分为三个阶段:一、对学龄期儿童阅读汉字字体情况作基本了解,幷制定研究计划、确定研究方法;二、通过文献调查、专家访谈等方法深度分析问题,以探寻学龄期儿童用字需求、主要难点和可行设计方向,深度分析问题,重点从心理学角度梳理不同汉字类型对阅读效率的影响,引用衬线类和无衬线类字体在识别性(Legibility)和易读性(Readability)上的定量资料分析结论;三、逐步明确设计思路,幷完成童楷家族字体的设计来进行验证,以期解决问题。

 

This study targets at the elementary school children. It aims to improve the design of Chinese fonts. It has its roots in Art and Design, yet involves findings in other subject areas such as Visual Psychology, Children Psychology, Type Design, Calligraphy and Aesthetics study. Based on the principle of "understanding the problem -- analyzing the problem -- solving the problem", this paper divides the research and design into three stages: First, make a basic understanding of the reading situation of Chinese characters and fonts for school-age children, and then make research plans and determine research methods; Second, through the method of literature investigation, expert interview and so on in-depth analysis of problems, to explore the school-age children words requirements, main difficulties and feasible design direction, in-depth analysis of problems, mainly from the perspective of psychology to comb the influence of different types of Chinese characters on the reading efficiency, reference serif and sans-serif font in the identification, Legibility and Readability of quantitative data analysis; Third, Gradually clarify the design idea, and complete the design of Tongkai family fonts to verify, in order to solve the problem.

通过对阅读体验、阅读效率、汉字审美与传承、规范用字等学龄期儿童阅读因素的研究和综合考虑,梳理了两条创新性设计思路:一是需融合楷体和黑体的特征进行字形设计;二是需用系统性和动态发展的眼光,针对学龄期各阶段需求的变化,构建结构(中宫、字面)、笔形、字重等多种字形特征可动态变化但又风格统一的家族字体。

 

具体来说就是: 1. 低年级主要考虑阅读效率,字面大、中宫松的字更合适;高年级更多考虑审美性,字面小、中宫紧的字更合适。 2. 低年级注重识别性(Legibility),需要减弱甚至取消衬线(黑体的无机感);高年级注重易读性(Readability),需要有衬线(楷体的书写感)。 3. 低年级适宜硬笔风格;高年级适宜软笔风格。 4. 不同年级都需要不同的字重来满足不同场景需求(标题、正文、不同字号等)。

 

继而以笔形(stroke shape)为x轴、结构(structure)为y轴、字重(weight)为z轴构建坐立体标体系,分阶段对三个变量进行设计和测试,从大量测试字形中选定了分别适用于低、中、高年级的3款基础字形,幷拓展了6款字重,总共18款字体。

 

Through the study and comprehensive consideration of reading experience, reading efficiency, aesthetic and inheritance of Chinese characters, standardized characters and other reading factors for school-age children, two innovative design ideas are sorted out: First, the characteristics of regular script and boldface should be combined to design the character; Second, it needs a systematic and dynamic perspective to build a family font with dynamic changes in its structure (zhonggong, literal), pen shape, character weight and other font features according to the requirements of each stage of school age.

 

To be specific, it is as follows: 1. The lower grades mainly consider the reading efficiency, the literal big and middle gongsong characters are more appropriate; 2. Upperclassmen consider more esthetic, literal small, in the palace of tight words more appropriate. Lower grades focus on Legibility, and need to reduce or even remove the linings. Higher grades focus on Readability and require a sense of serif. 3. Suitable for lower grades; Senior grade suitable soft pen style. 4. Different grades require different word reworks to meet the needs of different scenes (title, text, different font size, etc.).

 

Then the pencil (stroke shape) for the x axis, structure (structure) for the y axis, heavy (weight) for the z axis build by three-dimensional standard system, in stages to design and test of three variables, selected from a large number of test glyph respectively suitable for low, middle and senior three basic glyph, and expand the six words, a total of 18 font.

童楷家族字体整体风格平和、温暖,端庄幷不失灵动,变化丰富且风格统一。符合儿童各学龄期各阶段认知习惯,提升阅读效率,呵护儿童视力和健康成长。同时,本课题符合国家提倡的研发教科书体的科研导向,期望填补和推进这一重要领域中的研究空白。借助视觉心理学和设计艺术学等学科的研究成果来解决学龄期儿童阅读汉字字体的设计需求,对有代表性的阅读字体进行剖析,借助设计学的手段和方法提出解决矛盾的方法幷完成设计实践和初步评估。因此,选题、解决方法和研究设计结果具有一定的价值。

 

All in all, this study fills in a valuable research gap, is in line with the national research orientation of the typeface development for school textbooks. It researches the topic through both theory and practice, mainly uses knowledge from both psychology and design to solve the type design needs for school children. It fills the research gap, gathers original findings and creates innovative design outcomes. Design solutions are highly recognized by experts and are believed to be good solutions for the proposed design challenge.
