“Every phenomenon on earth is symbolic, and each symbol is an open gate through which the soul, if it is ready, can enter into the inner part of the world, where you and I and day and night are all one... spirit and eternal life are living behind the symbol. Of course, very few people go through the gate and abandon the beautiful phenomenon of the outside world for the interior reality that they intuit.” (Iris by Hermann Hesse)
All phenomena in the world are carriers of information. People extract useful information through observation and prediction. What can make me stay and stare must have a meaning beyond the appearance. I try to re-examine the familiar things around me, so that the information I used to neglect can enter my horizon again. The process of depiction prolongs the time of observation. During this period, more thinking occurs to me, and they gradually overturn the established cognition of inertia. In this long-term observation, some deep-rooted judgments are possible to be broke down.
如何理解项目与“人文湾区 ∙ 温暖的设计”这一主题的关联性？
How does the project reflect the exhibition theme "Cultural Bay Area • Humanistic Design"?
The contents of these two oil paintings are the border of Manhattan in New York and Jersey City, and Buddhism Kuan-yin in Sendai, Japan. I put the unrelated, impossible things into one painting, creating a hyper-formalistic atmosphere where reality and virtuality blend together. I focus on the meaning of symbols in different cultures, and broaden their boundaries, break the boundaries between the Bay Area culture and the globe culture, and blur the boundaries of history and future.
