Project Background

Shenkang School is a combined school for primary and junior high students with 54 classrooms.

The project is situated in Shenzhen city center with Antuo Mountain on the north and Shenkang Village on the East. The site condition & the demand of classes for SK school makes this design job extremely challenging. According to current local standards, it is a 54-class school on a 36-class site.

Problem Statement and Project Solution

The biggest limitation for this project is the small plot, which turned out to be the driver behind our concept.

The fact that the school building and the sport fields already claimed their share of the site, there is not much space left for public spaces and green.

Since the height restriction of 24 meters makes it does not allow further “verticalization” of the building, the only playfield left was within the X&Y axis, which is by itself constraint by the 10 and 25 m distance rule.

Our strategy was to focus on the manipulation of the program organization within this tight envelope with limited flexibility for modification.

Creative Process & Result

Program organization and the 3D public spaces

The required programs are divided into 2 major clusters, the first consist of the main classrooms with the offices for the teachers and the second are the supporting programs with the shared educational spaces.

The cluster of the main classrooms and the teachers’ offices is organized in a conventional way, occupying 3 rectilinear volumes with all rooms facing the south to meet the day lighting requirements.

The volumes of the shared educational programs, like the sport hall, canteen, library, dance studios and computer labs, each with its own dimension undergo a manipulation of stacking and shifting to form a vertical system of terraces and plazas to compensate the lost of public space and green on the ground floor.

The shared education programs and the terraces are connected by an internal street on each floor with a width of 5 meters. Because of its dimension, the street as a circulation system opens up opportunities to be occupied for informal usage.

Lifely Facade

The precise manipulation of the shared programs, the 3D terraces and the educational street turns the façade into a real-time medium, revealing the daily routines of the school.

How does the project reflect to the exhibition theme "Cultural Bay Area • Humanistic Design"?

What makes this project so special is the national education reform & the extreme site condition together giving us this opportunity to try out an alternative way of school design, and bring in brand new education experience.

We would like to make our contribution to this exhibition with this project to show how architecture can improve the quality of life of our communities.
