Located in the Central, Hong Kong's popular financial district, AIA Group decided to add coffee shops in the lobby to make it easier for commuters to enjoy their coffee. The lobby itself is simple and elegant, with white marble floors with black marble walls and dark gray metal and wood ceilings, but the main attraction is the tall glass facade facing the bank of China Building described by the architect Pei Lv Ming. According to the design outline, Party A hopes that the coffee shop can integrate the atmosphere of the lobby and avoid blocking the view to the glass curtain wall as much as possible.
Problem Statement and Project Solution
In order to create a coffee shop that does not conflict with the lobby environment, first of all, we selected materials that have already appeared in the lobby and put them into the coffee shop to make the overall feeling consistent. And the second factor is the need of permeability, itself, English "AIA" AIA, font look likes a bamboo stick overlap. Other people think of a small game - "pick bamboo stick, bamboo stick itself is very fragile, but when the number of overlap together to form a solid structure, and permeability is strong, will not affect the sight.
Creation Process & Result
Finally, we used the structure like bamboo stick. After careful calculations, we built the whole coffee shop, including pillars, walls, ceilings and even lights. The bamboo stick material basically is divided into metal and lumber. The coffee bar table is composed of black and white two kinds of marble. It is all "local materials". Due to the location of the cafe, the whole cafe covers the pillars of one of the buildings, so we covered this part with boards and turned it into a display wall.
How does the project reflect the exhibition theme ‘Cultural Bay Area • Humanistic Design’？
Mikado was one of my favorite games when I was young. We used to play a lot with family and friends. I wish to bring this childhood memory by designing my own Mikado structure.
