Project Background

Linear strips of sky, narrow spaces, and long lines of site define the hyper-vertical spaces of the urban village. At ground level, coarse materials and dark humidity draw the gaze constantly upwards and towards the source of sunlight. The single band of sky is the architectural signature of Yu Tian village, a permanent gesture amidst crowded buildings that reach ever-higher. SKY LINE is a celebration of this strip of sky. Constructed of clear acrylic panels with iridescent finish, the installation stands three meters tall and two meters wide. It distills and purifies the spatial experience of the urban village: uninterrupted strips of sky and vertical planes propel the visitor from one end to the next. Inside, the rusty metal and damp ceramic of the urban village disappear, and the visitor is enveloped by smooth, iridescent planes. Upon exiting, the visitor returns to the architecture of the urban village with fresh eyes and imagination. SKY LINE celebrates the architectural condition which makes the urban village an extraordinary architectural organism, a unique product of its time and place in the Chinese city.

Problem Statement and Project Solution

There are many large and small urban villages in Shenzhen. Generally, the first impression of urban villages is that they are crowded, dark, damp, and messy. As a result, space, light and air have become the most difficult and valuable resources here. The original intention of the design is to bring a little warmth from nature to the residents in the urban villages. Therefore, we designed a“container”with a wide bottom, a narrow top and a long and narrow body to guide the light and wind, and form a dreamy space after being refracted by the Holographic Film.

How does the project reflect the exhibition theme "Cultural Bay Area • Humanistic Design"?

Through the design, we hope to try to give the residents of the village in the city some sense of ritual and scene of daily life. We think that the crowded living space, and the low quality of life can not be equated. Therefore, we hope to provide residents with a kind of life experience by means of space installation in the places they must pass through every day. This experience is a subtle, daily, but has the experience of divine light and space. Through such space experience, we hope that the design can give the urban space a kind of humanistic care to the "urban marginalized" groups in the urban villages through different means and strategies.

Project Background

This project is a part of Yutian Village gentrification, and is a part of the "City Design Festival | Beautiful Yutian" initiated by ASSBOOK. Eight design teams from Shenzhen and Guangzhou participated in this event. And, we proposed five pieces of unique sculptural benches, which were placed in three separate pocket spaces.

The urban villages in Shenzhen are usually composed of five to six stories self-built blocks densely packed in a bounded area with a non-planned narrow lane network, and they don’t provide a livable quality of light, ventilation, and fire protection. Therefore, a part of the villages in the city has been erased and the other part has been renewed on the basis of the original buildings. Yutian Village has been undergoing the gentrification process since 2018. The closed community of the past has been opened to the outside, providing more rental flats for the youth, coffee shops, bookstores, zakka stores, and so on. With the transformation of the entire village, the community is also undergoing drastic changes. This design festival hopes to promote the sustainable development of the community by designing new small public spaces for the village.

Problem Statement and Project Solution

After investigation, we believe that Yutian Village needs to build new public places that can encourage community interaction, such as a park for children to play, and public facilities for pedestrians to stop and relax. At the same time, we hope to provide a "pleasant walking experience" for the new street space in Yutian Village: here people explore the streets with excitement, and discover various interesting places.

In the initial stage of the project, we developed a proposal called "Big mountain" and completed the construction drawing. This was a platform-style pocket park with a terrazzo surface designed for a long and narrow open space at the entrance of the village. It also had the support of villagers. However, on the eve of construction, the owner of the opposite building suddenly objected to build anything on this open space. Because of the high density of urban villages and the complexity of ownership, villagers have a conservative attitude towards new constructions, and the idea of “community making” has not been widely understood and accepted in the area. For similar reasons, most of the design teams participating in the event eventually chose to design their works as a "temporary structure".

When the site is uncertain, we have developed a design that can be applied to any place in the village. It is prefabricated in a factory and can be transported to any site at any time. In the end, two were fortunately installed on a small public square in the village, and the remaining three can only be installed in the commercial open space in front of Vanke's leased buildings. Fortunately, the five "small animals" have not turned into "temporary structures", and they still hide and seek in the village until now. They were accepted by the villagers and became a part of Yutian Village.

We proposed five pieces of unique sculptural benches, which were placed in three separate pocket spaces. They are composed of legs and torso, and look like small animals walking around in the village. The sense of freedom brought about by abstract shapes encourages people to interact with them in different ways. This project provides a small playground for nearby children. The children like to take off their shoes and use their hands to hold the body of the "little animal" and climb on it to play. Our design is not only a set of urban furniture, but also a corner for people to communicate in the village.

How does the project reflect to the exhibition theme "Cultural Bay Area • Humanistic Design"

The urban villages are the result brought about by the high-speed urbanization in Shenzhen, and currently they provides cheap and convenient accommodation for young people who have just arrived at this city. However, the narrow streets and lack of public space have also become common problems in urban villages. Our proposal for Yutian village is not only a set of urban furniture, but also a corner for people to communicate. As a small office in the metropolis of Shenzhen, we try to retrieve the daily life culture and humanized public space neglected by the high-speed urban construction, and provide people with a relaxed urban experience and diversity lifestyle.

Project Background

In Shenzhen, Yutian urban village has a drastic environment differences between itself and its surrounding. This urban village is located in one of the Shenzhen earliest developed area and it is consisted of government offices, public facilities and shopping malls on its Northern side, and transforming urban villages on its Southern side due to the rapid urbanization of Shenzhen. The “Urban Store” is a pop up store located at Block 53 in Yutian urban village. The idea of this Urban Store is to create a platform for the urban villages community to connect through exchange of ideas and activities.

Problem Statement and Project Solution

The Yutian Urban Village was undergoing a drastic upgrade. The major renovation on the public spaces and residential buildings has a drastic impact on the local community daily life. When our team got invited to be a part of the community building team from Urban Design Festival, we wish to create a pop-up platform where we could understand local community’s needs through a series of games and community activities in the mist of chaotic construction environment. During this process, we noticed there are specks of street vendors that spread across existing urban villages. In comparison, all the street vendors seems to have lost their ability to stay afloat as their customers and spots are no longer available due to the ongoing construction in Yutian urban Village.

This scenario triggered us to utilize the idea of ‘store’ as a platform to connect with the local community and use this opportunity to explore a new system for the street vendors to counter drastic conditions change.

The Urban Store is formed by 3 functional zones:

1. Exhibition Zone. This zone is used to exhibit information of Urban public space upgrade and Communal building activities during Urban Design Festival

2. Communication Zone. Designed portable vendor carts to collect and exhibits local community ideas and comments.

3. Sales Zone. A pop-up spot for the street vendors and local community to do business, services and pop up activities for community building.

The bright orange colour on the ‘Urban Store’ creates a spark of visual connection to the public. A catalyst for them to see the ongoing exhibitions in the store. It emphasizes a process of ongoing drastic renovation and construction and the colour also acts as a sign of cautious warning to the public.

Through a series of exhibitions and community building activities, through the ‘Urban Store’ platform the community building team managed to bridge a trust and friendship with the local community, allow their voice and needs to be heard.

How does the project reflect the exhibition theme "Cultural Bay Area • Humanistic Design"?

In the recent years, there are a large number of urban renewal and reconstructions within the Shenzhen’s urban villages, however these transformation are often designed under standardize commercial settings. Under this circumstances, most of the vulnerable groups have difficulties to adapt to these drastic changes. This triggered us to rethink how could design works as a instrument to mitigate the impact on local community. Urban Store become a catalyst of this process. Through simple designs and ideas, Urban Store played as a platform for the community to voice their opinions and to rebuilt the neighbourhood. Furthermore, Urban Store gave an opportunity to explore new possibilities for reviving street vendors.
