The pre-renovation building is a supporting dormitory for the factory in suburban. When the low-end industries move out as costs rise, those dormitories have been gradually vacant. At the same time, the construction of subway, the high housing rent and living cost in the city center force many white-collar workers to move out to live. In addition, most of the commercial housing in the extensive development era lack community due to the shortage of public programs. This renovation project hopes to not only improve the quality of original space, but also create a diverse and life-rich community.
Problem Statement and Project Solution
The layout of the dormitory before renovation only meets the sleeping requirement and the space is small and crowded. In order to enlarge the interior space, the balcony made of steel is cantilevered from the concrete structure. At the same time, the partition walls between units have three colors of red, yellow and grey, and these colors are randomly arranged among the facade. And the aluminum gratings that cover outdoor air conditioners change with horizontal and vertical directions. The form of the handrails responds to the gratings and the handrails are a combination of vertical circular tubes made of stainless steel. Thereby, the whole apartment's facade renovation is the result of the construction of a series of new functional components. What’s more, vertical grids and climbing plants are added to the external corridor of Block A on the basis of the existing shape, which brings greenery space to the external corridor, so that every tenant can get close to nature when they go home and go out.
Creation Process & Result
The original 10000㎡ dormitories have three buildings: two buildings that have the same layout of internal corridors and an L-shape building of external corridor. The two buildings are integrated together by adding an elevator hall between them. One of the stairs is transformed into two elevators due to the connectivity of evacuation after the combination.
In addition to the control of the architectural scale, the consideration of the amenity scale is also applied to the interior space design of the apartment. In the interior of the apartment, by studying people's living habits and elaborating the size of the human body, each living function is arranged in a compact and orderly manner in the smaller interior space: storage space, work and study space, rest space, leisure dining space, cooking space and toilet. All Spaces are designed in a way that combines the dimensions of fixed furniture, movable furniture and appliances to make the most of the space.
How does the project reflect the exhibition theme "Cultural Bay Area • Humanistic Design"?
Jiakeli Apartment Renovation is to construct a humanistic community with neighborhood relationship. The design of warmth should be people-oriented. In the current fast pace of urban life, functional needs are the most basic elements for residents, and how to bring spiritual warmth is a more important expectation.
Except for the upgrading of living units, the design of the apartment also includes public programs, such as communication hall, shared kitchen, fitness space, audio-visual recreation, roof-top basketball court and outdoor courtyard. These public spaces not only improve the living condition, but also become the cohesion of the community, enriching the residents’ public life.

项目创作背景 Project Background
In The Living Art Pavilion project, the four directions of the base are four different urban spaces. The building should be embedded in the site, not only using different strategies to respond to the four different interfaces, but the purpose of such embedding is to actively integrate site elements and improve spatial environment. The building's northern facade facing the expressway and with high and low walls, can block the impact of noise from the expressway in the north, while providing a pleasant landscape space for the interior through the original terminalia mantaly in the base. The building's southern facade creates a comfortable and pleasant pedestrian space with the office building on the southern side through courtyard & transparent glass interface. Surrounded by negative urban space filled with factories, The Living Art Pavilion is like an oasis in the desert. We do not want to make the building look abrupt through the contrast, but hope that positive micro-environment formed by architectural intervention can foster the understanding and awareness of the public towards public urban space.
项目问题与解决方式 Problem Statement and Project Solution
The Living Art Pavilion faces the expressway in the north, with a row of Terminalia mantaly retained right outside the northern walls. The northern walls are specially designed at different heights, which not only lowered the impact of noises from the expressway, but also formed a beautiful space inside with the Terminalia mantaly. The pavilion, together with the commercial and artistic spaces on the ground floor of the office building No.2, which located at the south of the pavilion, creates a dynamic recreation atmosphere. At the same time, a comfortable and pleasant public space for pedestrians are perfectly created due to interfaces and scales of two buildings which interact with each other.

The whole building is composed of six unit blocks. The independent furniture store is composed of four unit blocks in the west, while the other two unit blocks near the city plaza of entrance functions as tea house. By placing some outdoor chairs in the plaza, the tea house creates a comfortable environment for the public life. The middle two unit blocks are combined into one to provide a large exhibition space for the furniture store.
Prototype of Living Art Pavilion are referring to elements of traditional dwellings in Shajing: sloping roof and courtyard space. Each unit block is composed of a courtyard and a unidirectional roofed building.
Being roof structure of the building, concrete rib beams enhance the aerial perspective effect of the sloping roof. At the same time, the exposed concrete beams retain the wood texture of the pine formwork. The walls and openings are distributed in the north-south direction of each unit, which created a sense of order and a feeling of depth in the east-west direction of interior space.
如何理解项目与“人文湾区∙温暖的设计”这一主题的关联性？ How does the project reflect to the exhibition theme "Cultural Bay Area • Humanistic Design"
The The Living Art Pavilion uses traditional architectural elements to respond to the contemporary lifestyle through new Spaces and people. At the same time, the integration of architecture and nature enables people to return to nature. The warm design, should stand in the approachable scale consideration. The Living Art Pavilion has tried to reuse the space of the traditional architecture, so that it can meet the needs of people in modern life. The integration of architecture and nature emphasizes the mutual penetration of architectural space and natural environment. People can feel the charm of nature when they are in the building, and therefore they blend into nature. While maintaining the independence of its architectural language, The Living Art Pavilion also makes the building and the environment have a dialogue, which makes the relationship between people, nature and tradition come into being, and emphasizes the "locality" of the building again.
